The Alla Prima Figure

Would you like to create more realistic
figurative paintings, while loosening up your brushwork at the same
time? Are you confused by color mixing, and unsure of how to achieve
beautiful flesh tones? I can help you with that!
This fun and
intense three-day workshop will focus on the essentials of figure
painting, using a limited palette of three colors plus white. This
traditional palette, famously used by Swedish artist Anders Zorn, is
made up of yellow ocher, cadmium red, ivory black, and titanium white.
work from live models. All stages of mixing and painting will be
demonstrated, and students will have plenty of painting time!
Instruction will be in oils, but acrylics are welcome.
Still Life Painting: Fast and Fun!
April 15 - 16, 2017 (2 days)
There's more to the still life than fruit and flowers! Simple,
colorful arrangements are a great way to hone your artistic vision, delve into
color, composition, and brushwork, and make painting fun and accessible for
everyone. In this two-day workshop, we'll talk color mixing and do some of
Sarah's favorite painting exercises, as well as longer duration paintings.Sarah will demonstrate her painting process, and you'll have plenty of
painting time, along with individual instruction and constructive critiques.Change your approach to painting - and your ideas of what a still life
can be!Artists of
all levels welcome - paint in oils or acrylics. Instruction will be in oils.Two-day
workshop, 7 hours each day. Maximum of 6 students.
Color Mixing For Painters
April 28 - 29, 2017 (2 days)

brushwork at the same time? Are you looking for a simpler, more logical
approach to color mixing? This fun and intense two-day workshop will
focus on the essentials of realistic painting (value, color, and
brushstrokes), with an emphasis on keeping your work loose and
painterly. Beginning with value, moving on to black and white, and
detouring through complementary colors, we will conclude by mixing up a
full spectrum of colors using a three-primary color palette. This
workshop is still-life based, and instruction will be in oils, though
acrylics are more than welcome.

Introduction to Oil Painting
May 13 - 13, 2017 (one day)
Whether you're new to oil paint, returning to painting, or an experienced artist looking to
branch out, this workshop is designed to familiarize you with oil paint and energize your
studio practice. We'll explore topics including basic materials, color, value, and mixing,
as well as the all- important question:
"What should I paint?" Begin exploring oil painting, or tone your painting muscles!
Students of all levels welcome. Ages 15 and above.
Intro to Oil Painting
July 19 - 21, 2017 (3 days)
Whether you're a total beginner, an experienced artist looking to try a
new medium, or a painter returning to oils after some time away, this
three-day workshop has something for you! Get familiar with oil paint
and energize your art making practice with a focus on the fundamentals
of loose, realistic painting. We'll explore topics including basic
materials, color, value, mixing as well as the all-important question:
"What should I paint?" Beginning with value - the dark and light
relationships between objects - we'll detour through complementary
colors, and then move on to a primary color palette, mixing up a full
spectrum from three tubes of paint. Working with a limited palette has
so many benefits, and can be applied to portrait, still life, landscape -
or any kind of painting you want to do! Begin your oil painting journey
or give your skills a tune up! This workshop is still life based.
Students of all levels welcome, ages 15 and above.

Portrait Painting with a Limited Palette
July 22 - 23, 2017 (2 days)
Do you love painting people but struggle with capturing a likeness or
mixing beautiful flesh tones? Would you like to work from photos but
feel the resulting paintings lack that spark of liveliness? Do you want
to loosen up your brushwork and be more free to experiment with color in
your portraits? During this two-day workshop we will focus on these and
other aspects of portrait painting, working from a live model with a
simple palette of three colors plus white. There are many benefits to
using a limited palette, and these four colors - Titanium White, Yellow
Ochre, Cadmium Red, and Ivory Black - famously used by Swedish painter
Anders Zorn - create especially beautiful skin tones. The alla prima
painting style, in which a work is begun and finished in one or two
sittings, while the paint is still wet, is lots of fun and perfect for
exploring the portrait in oils. A combination of demonstrations, short
exercises, and longer-duration paintings will familiarize you with
Sarah's approach to the portrait. Instruction will be in oils, and
students are encouraged to use them in class, but acrylics are also
welcome. Water-soluble oils are not recommended. Beginning to advanced
